About the Maths Department
The department is a strength of the school and students apply mathematical skills adeptly in a range of other subjects. The school is keen to develop still further the academic successes which have been gained by the pupils right across the ability range including a number of students going on to study Mathematics at degree level. At GCSE, there is high attainment and improving results (typically 85-90%+ 9-4/A*-C) and very positive value-added e.g. EBacc Maths value-added was “significantly above” national. We have a large cohort of students at A level, typically 50+ students studying single maths as well as in our ‘Plus One’ option block a Core Maths Class in the Lower Sixth and a Further Maths class, where students can choose to study either the 1 year AS or 2 year full A level course.
'We are a strong, supportive department with a keen interest in Mathematics teaching and developing our practice. Staff are encouraged to share their ideas and are always happy to engage in a discussion about how best to teach a specific concept. Department meetings are centred around maths specific CPD and improving our mathematics teaching. Staff embrace this, frequently continuing these conversations into the week discussing their experiences as they experiment with these ideas.'
